Oppenheimer Returns to IMAX as Nolan's Next Epic Looms

Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's sweeping biographical epic about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the atomic bomb, is returning to a limited run of IMAX screens — a re-release the studio is positioning as a chance for audiences to experience the film in the large-format presentation Nolan championed.
The 2023 film, adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus, stars Cillian Murphy in the title role alongside Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon and Florence Pugh. It became both a critical landmark and a commercial phenomenon, grossing more than $975 million worldwide against expectations that a three-hour, R-rated historical drama would struggle at the box office.
At the 96th Academy Awards, Oppenheimer swept the ceremony with seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Downey Jr. The renewed theatrical run underscores how firmly the film has entered the modern canon.
The timing is no accident. With Nolan's next project — a large-scale adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey — among the most anticipated films on the horizon, the re-release keeps the director front of mind and gives newer fans a chance to revisit the work that cemented his standing as one of the few filmmakers who can turn a dense historical drama into a global event.
